Situated on the banks of river cauvery &
45 Km to east of mysore, 140Km from Bangalore is Talakad, There are some old temples
in this area which are buried under the white soil. The temples
are open for ceremonial worship once in 12 years.
The name of the place is derived from two local chieftains called Tala and Kada. Talkad was the capital of Gangas and Cholas. There are five shrines of Lord Shiva which are called Pancha Linga. These temples are buried under the sand (except one). Kirti Narayana temple (constructed during Vishnuvardhana period) is situated in this place.
Talakad Panchalinga Darshana: In honour of above five Shiva temples, a fair is held once every 12 years called Panchalinga Darshana. The Panchalinga Darshana is held on a new moon day in the month of Karthika when two stars conjoin, the stars of Khuha Yoga and Vishaka. The last Panchalinga Darshana held in 2009.
